It is a bright and beautiful day in Cebu! We began the lectures in the Diplomat’s Hotel this morning a little later than expected because the venue was not prepared by the management. It is a Filipino-style hotel in the heart of downtown Cebu, so it is very accessible, but leaves somewhat to be desired in service. The brethren here all helped to do the work setting up the venue, so we were able to get things done quickly.
These lectures are intended to focus more on edifying and strengthening the brethren in this area, rather than focusing on denominational preachers or people. The brethren here have especially asked that we help in topic to strengthen them in daily living, reaching those outside of Christ and maturing in doctrine. I started with a lesson on “The Life of Joseph: Characteristics of a Faithful Life.” It discussed our need for faithfully teaching the word of God, moral purity, forgiveness over revenge, accepting God’s providence and looking to God’s promise. Chip followed that sermon with one on “Characteristics of Jesus.”
After lunch, I presented an extended study on the error of “Premillennialism.” We had first planned this study for some men from premillennial groups calling themselves “churches of Christ” that are being supported by premillennial “churches of Christ” in the United States. They were unable to make the travel for these studies, but several of the members here in Cebu asked that the lessons be given so that they could learn more on the subject and be prepared to teach their friends who believe this error. The study is one I normally do over two days in our preacher training programs, but we went straight through the material for today’s study. It took about two hours and the audience stayed attentive, especially those who had not heard teaching on the subject before. Chip followed with a sermon urging personal responsibility (what is often called “taking ownership” in the business world) in various aspects of duty. It was a very good lesson with clear and specific application made to our lives.
Following Chip’s lesson, we had a little time left for a question/answer session. The members were encouraged to write down any questions to clarify the lessons given throughout the day or to clarify another Bible topic.
There are several churches in the Cebu area. Jonathan Carino works with one that meets in the central business district of Cebu City. Roy Matta works with one in Mandaue City. Fred Ogario labors with the brethren in Talisay City. Jun Apatan preaches for the congregation on South Road in Cebu City. Pablo Espinoza labors with the church in Lapu-lapu City. Gil Suico has worked very hard to start a congregation in Bogo City at the north end on the metropolitan area. Brethren from all but one of these groups were present today and it was a good opportunity for them to get together and encourage one another as well as learning more of God’s truth.
After having something to eat for supper, we will get to work on several lessons that have been requested by the audience. Please keep us in your prayers as we continue these efforts tomorrow, the Lord willing.
Brotherly, Harry O.
